Preppy Halloween

Oct 19

Sometimes it’s hard to decorate for a holiday when the color scheme looks nothing like your home. Halloween is one of those seasons. I’ve spent years working on ways to decorate my house without bringing in orange. At least very much orange.

And since my house is much more modern and preppy than traditional Halloween - finding something that works can feel tricky. I’ve been collecting things that work here, like the black martini glasses, over the years so I have a little bit of a collection now of dark neutrals that give a spooky vibe that leans into preppy and modern.

This is the perfect time of year for the hydrangeas too! They are on the brink of death (ahem, perfect for Halloween) and they have become a perfect purple-y color for the fall.

Here are my tips for creating your own Halloween table that works for you:

Integrate the color that repeats already in your house. We have grey cabinets, so grey candles and grey plates tie in with the rest of the house.
Repeat the same colors throughout the table. I used the black martini glasses, black candlesticks and black bordered napkins.
Add some sparkle! My tablecloth is a length of fabric from the fabric store. The dark gold adds sparkle and glamour without being too much.
Set the table properly. You can serve slices of pizza and make them look fancy if the table is set to look fancy. Also, pizza is actually a great choice on Halloween because you will end up jumping up to get the door one million times.
